We are happy to share with you that our paper entitled “Evaluating a graphical notation for modelling software development methodologies” has been published on Elsevier’s Journal of Visual Languages and Computing. This paper is the result of the joint work of Kenia Sousa, Jean Vanderdonckt, Brian Henderson-Sellers and Cesar Gonzalez-Perez in the last years.

This work evaluated a graphical notation that supports the ISO/IEC 24744 standard, a metamodel composed of key concepts for development methodologies. This graphical notation has a set of common symbols that can be used to specify software (and other kinds of) development methodologies (e.g. a customisation of RUP, an agile method, etc.).

We have evaluated the elements and diagrams of the notation using the Cognitive Dimensions Framework. This framework aids in delivering a standard evaluation of the usability of information artefacts along different dimensions to cover several aspects of the notation.

As a result of this evaluation, we suggested improvements to this notation in order to enhance its expressiveness and, consequently, the communication between the stakeholders who define and read/apply the methodologies.

The paper is available on Elsevier’s Journal of Visual Languages & Computing. If you are doing research on the field, please take this paper into consideration and do not hesitate to ask your questions.

We are happy to announce the preliminary call for papers to the joint conference IHC – CLIHC’2011 that puts together the Brazilian and the Latin American communities of Human-Computer Interaction. Of course, inviting the international community to participate! This year’s theme is “From personal computers to folk computing”. It puts into perspective how using computers is becoming so intrinsic to our daily lives and how we can think of ways to use it to our favor. Lots of interesting ideas will certainly arise from these four days of discussions enlightened by the sun in Porto de Galinhas.

I’m honored to have been invited to work with the program committee as a tutorial co-chair. This is an initiative to help young researchers actively participate in the community. I’ve started working and I’ll keep you updated with the news. Now, take a look at the preliminary call for papers.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Alex Repennig (University of Colorado, Boulder – USA)
Jesús Favela (Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada – Mexico)

THEME

The joint conference theme is FROM PERSONAL COMPUTERS TO FOLK COMPUTING, which explicitly evokes not only the speedy evolution of context in the users experience with computers (from the individual to the collective and societal), but also a leap in the knowledge level required from users to take full advantage of widely available resources in Web 2.0 (from knowing about computers to knowing about computing). In the not-so-distant past, full citizenship depended on being literate with Maths and Language in order to use numbers and words efficiently to achieve one’s individual and collective goals in society. Now, this depends more and more on being literate with Computers, and using programs to express and achieve our social and civil goals, with the Internet enabling new forms for communities and societies.

The conference organizers invite the Brazilian, the Latin American and the International HCI communities to discuss the role of HCI researchers and practitioners in developing interactive technologies that truly promote Computing Literacy. We are interested in discussing the users’ needs, expectations, experiences and possibilities while using computers and computing to participate fully in social and civil activities supported by computer systems. In the context of Latin America, where this conference takes place, we are especially interested in discussing how HCI can promote and bring about increased levels of social development.

Contributions to the conference program should address one of the following non-exclusive aspects of moving FROM PERSONAL COMPUTERS TO FOLK
COMPUTING:

Accessibility and therapeutic uses of interaction

Adaptive, adaptable, intelligent user interfaces

—————————————————————————-
The joint conference theme is **FROM PERSONAL COMPUTERS TO FOLK
COMPUTING**, which explicitly evokes not only the speedy evolution of
context in the users experience with computers (from the individual to the
collective and societal), but also a leap in the knowledge level required
from users to take full advantage of widely available resources in Web 2.0
(from knowing about computers to knowing about computing). In the
not-so-distant past, full citizenship depended on being literate with
Maths and Language in order to use numbers and words efficiently to
achieve one’s individual and collective goals in society. Now, this
depends more and more on being literate with Computers, and using programs
to express and achieve our social and civil goals, with the Internet
enabling new forms for communities and societies.

The conference organizers invite the Brazilian, the Latin American and the
International HCI communities to discuss the role of HCI researchers and
practitioners in developing interactive technologies that truly promote
Computing Literacy. We are interested in discussing the users’ needs,
expectations, experiences and possibilities while using computers and
computing to participate fully in social and civil activities supported by
computer systems. In the context of Latin America, where this conference
takes place, we are especially interested in discussing how HCI can
promote and bring about increased levels of social development.

Contributions to the conference program should address one of the
following non-exclusive aspects of moving FROM PERSONAL COMPUTERS TO FOLK
COMPUTING:

•Accessibility and therapeutic uses of interaction
•Adaptive, adaptable, intelligent user interfaces
•Affective computing
•Augmented reality

We are happy to inform that an article reporting recent contributions on Usi4Biz research was accepted to be published on the Business Process Management Journal. The article is entitled “Getting Users Involved in the Alignment of their Needs with Business Processes Models and Systems” and it was written to report the experience of applying the Usi4Biz methodology at Belgacom, the biggest telecommunication company in Belgium.

Simulation of customer service

This work was possible thanks to the support of Amandine Lievyns, a UCL master student at the time, who had an internship at Belgacom and helped us to apply the methodology in some internal processes. Her master dissertation was about this experience and she could give a significant contribution for this article.

Usi4Biz has been applied in two large organizations and with this article we have completed the publication of each one of these applications in journals. The previous one was an article in JUCS, reporting how Usi4Biz was conceived and applied in an insurance company, which is part of a Belgian bank.

A complete reference to this article will be available in our research page, as soon as we have more information from the publisher.

An important milestone was achieved last month at IBM Forum Brussels. Kênia Sousa, who is now a doctor in Management Science, defended her PhD thesis on June 24th. Her thesis represents the consolidation of all research produced on the promising field of UI-Business alignment so far.

Kênia Sousa on her PhD defense at IBM Forum Brussels

The ceremony was preceded by a presentation of Dr. Noi Sukaviriya, a distinguished researcher of the Watson Research Center, NY. The subject of her presentation was “Human Aspects & Entity-Centric Business Process Modeling”, summarizing the IBM contributions on rethinking the way how business processes might be managed in the future.

The ceremony began when the jury entered the room and the president of the jury, Prof. Philippe Chevalier, presented the members of the jury, who were Prof. Jean Vanderdonckt (UCL, Belgium), the advisor; Prof. Gaëlle Calvary (UJF – Grenoble INP, France); Prof. Stéphane Faulkner (UCL, Belgium); Prof. Manuel Kolp (UCL, Belgium); and Dr. Noi Sukaviriya (IBM Research, United States). Unfortunately, the jury could not count on the presence of Prof. Elizabeth Furtado (Unifor, Brazil), who was Kenia’s advisor during her scientific initiation. Although, she had an important participation on Kenia’s private defense early this year.

Kenia answering questions from the jury

Kenia presented her research during 35 minutes. After that, the president passed the word to the jury for questions. She was questioned for more 15 minutes, going very well in all answers. Then the president called the jury in private out of the room to the final deliberation. After some minutes the jury and the president came back to the room and announced their decision, assigning to Kenia the title of “Docteur en sciences économiques et de gestion” for her thesis titled “A Model-Driven Approach for User Interface – Business Process Alignment”.

The ceremony was witnessed by friends, relatives, co-workers and IBM employees. Most of them were kindly mentioned in the thesis acknowledgments for their direct support for the success of this challenging journey. This post is one more opportunity to say “thank you” to all the supporters. At last, Congratulations Kênia! We hope you keep your motivation high to continue this impressive and highly recognized research.

Going back to the experience at the Dagstuhl seminar. We noticed that a lot of products, from beverages to snacks, are available for sale near the cafeteria area. All we need to do is to pick what we want. The interesting thing is that there is nobody checking the products available to make sure that you’ve included your choices in your expense sheet. Another point is that all room doors do not close from outside, so when you go out to the seminar, to have dinner or out for a walk, your room is open. What is common in both situations? They simply trust us and it makes us thrust everyone.

There is a recent article at the Harvard Business Review that mentions the importance of trust in business. In any domain, from carpentry to IT, there is no technical skill that overshadows trust. This you cannot learn or teach, you can only feel it. Besides trusting your instincts to make decisions in the market place, trust between people plays even a larger role in the work environment. It is fundamental for everything to work smoothly.

Another great example of thrust with customers is by O’Reilly. First, they kindly convince customer to choose e-books saying “save a tree, go digital”, which is cheaper than buying the printed version. Second, when you buy e-books, they send an unprotected pdf file, trusting that you are not going to inappropriately share it with your friends and co-workers. When customers feel the trust, they are inclined to buy even more.

Trust is a sign of health in the business world, from workers to top management and from simple deals to global market confidence level. When you are recruiting people, how do you know they are trustworthy? Do you transmit to your customers how trustworthy you are? And how much do you trust them to take some risks?

Last week, we have attended a Dagstuhl Seminar on the theme of “Enabling Holistic Approaches to Business Process Lifecycle Management”. During the seminar, we came up with a set of challenges for business process management that included ideas from different domains, such as the human involvement, conceptual modeling, reuse, etc.

The purpose of the Dagstuhl Castle is to promote events on informatics research at an international level where people are invited to present ideas, discuss and interact. Dagstuhl is located in southwest Germany, near the French and Luxembourg borders, in a very green and peaceful place. There, professionals and researchers definitively get off-line from their problems and go deep inside the creative work.

Dagstuhl Castle

In this seminar, there were participants from different domains, such as software engineering, database, business process management, enterprise modeling, information systems, human-computer interaction, etc. Such a diverse group brought interesting and different points of view to the table.

What really called our attention was the interest on end-user involvement on business process management. Even though we have been working on this topic for the past 4 years, we were not expecting such a diverse group to find interest in this topic. Much to our amusement, we participated in two workgroups with very interesting researchers who were motivated to discuss about the upcoming trends concerning end-users involved in the business process management lifecycle. We believe, and hope, that this interest on end-user involvement for business process management just keeps on growing. This experience is very motivating for Usi4Biz.

We are in Brazil now, giving several presentations of the Usi4Biz Framework for some software companies, a big corporation and a university. Our intention is to listen to the vision and opinion of Brazilian business and research people about the framework and its adoption by companies of a country like Brazil. Our vision so far was built in a rich and well developed European country, where companies are more open to innovative ideas. Therefore, this geographical and cultural validation is very important to test how global the Usi4Biz Framework can be.

Brazilian tour

First of all, this experience has been very positive, actually, more than expected. We could feel a strong wave of positiveness as if there was no financial crisis out there. “We didn’t have any impact from the recent financial crisis. In fact, we are growing faster than ever and our single limitation today is the lack of high qualified professionals to perform more challenging projects”, said Márcio Braga, Ivia‘s Manager.

In the last 4 years, software companies were stimulated to approach universities in order to identify innovative ideas from the academia and analyse their capability of exploitation. Today, the links between companies and universities are stronger than ever. Some companies are in their fifth scientific project and currently getting ready for next calls. However, most companies are still figuring out how to transform a good idea in an innovative endeavor because the Brazilian academy is not so strong in applied research and researchers have some difficulty to visualize the exploitation of researches to the industry. But it is gradually changing thanks to government stimulus and the engagement of PhDs in companies’ teams.

Continuing the tour, we visited a large corporation, the Banco do Nordeste do Brasil – BNB (Bank of Northeast of Brazil), which is the third biggest public bank in Brazil and it is responsible for managing all investments of the federal government in the northeast of Brazil and providing credit at low cost for small and medium entrepreneurs. The bank is heavily investing on the definition and implementation of business processes and adopting a bunch of technologies to deploy processes through information systems. The same problematic we found in previous scenarios we also found in their environment, in other words, hundreds of applications, developed in several programming languages, running in a large variety of platforms and many process activities performed by information systems, composing a good case to take the framework into consideration.

Usi4Biz is also part of a long and serious research and we are gradually building a network of researchers around it. We made a presentation of the framework at University of Fortaleza – UNIFOR, where we had a good discussion about user interfaces in corporate environments and requirements elicitation. We are also celebrating a scientific partnership to permanently collaborate on joint researches between UCL and Unifor.

Last Thursday we presented the Usi4Biz Framework in the Expertise Centre For Digital Media (EDM) at the University of Hasselt, Belgium. We were specially happy about the discussion after the presentation, when the task model was put under pressure by an audience of model experts. It was an opportunity to reinforce the arguments that we have been using to justify the need for this model, which is so left aside by the market.

Presentation at University of Hasselt

The task model is one of the most used and discussed models in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) scientific community. But it is so unknown out there that the term “task model” doesn’t even have a definition in the colossal Wikipedia so far. When you search for this term, you will probably get “Did you mean: tsk model“, which is related with the thermodynamics of crystal surface formations, a totally different concept. Despite the almost complete lack of adoption by the market, the task model continues to be widely explored by the scientific community, as an essential tool to describe the behavior of information systems and their end users.

If the task model is so ignored by the market why did we decide to adopt it anyway? First of all, we are glad to be the first one or one of the first projects to present the task model to the market in a way that they didn’t reject it as one more model to make them fatter and inefficient. The task model was considered in the Usi4Biz Framework to intermediate the communication between two different domains: business process and user interaction. People have tried to connect these domains directly by declaring which user interface is used to perform each activity of the process, but this approach seems to be very simplistic, not addressing most of the real world situations, where user interfaces becomes more and more complex, not forgetting legacy systems which don’t have any kind of support from existing business process frameworks.

Nowadays, companies are rethinking about their adoption of models because some software development methodologies are innovating the way requirements and architecture are elicited. Widely used models as the UML ones are gradually being disposable with less people using tools and more people just sketching them and throwing them out later. However, some models are resisting very well, which is the case of the business process model and the data model. The first one is going well because companies are investing in corporate governance and describing their operations through business process models to become more communicative and transparent. The second one is also very relevant because data and the way it is organized is extremely import for the company. Entity relationship models are an essential source of information for all those who develop business applications. These models are relevant for two main reasons: 1) they are used to communicate and teach; and 2) they save resources by generating precise artifacts to the development team. In order to provide the same benefits for the company, we have made 2 decisions that may transform task models in an essential model as well. The decisions were:

Don’t force companies to change what they already have established: task models will not replace any useful model adopted by the company. Instead, it will increase the value of existing ones by addressing details they do not consider, like the end user interaction. Therefore, the adoption of the task model will not demand any adjustments on existing business process models and user interfaces. It will be inserted to connect both worlds, no matter how they are designed.

Take a mature representation of the task model and simplify it as much as we can: we want to demonstrate that the adoption of a new model is not so time consuming and unnecessary. If you have the chance to describe how people perform your business activities without falling back on long and boring text descriptions, instead, using a simplified model that doesn’t have so many structures to memorize and without any redundant information, you will see that time and money are actually saved.

A mature representation of the task model was proposed by Fabio Paterno, from University of Pisa, Italy. It is widely used by the scientific community because of its rich representativity. Most of the current evolutions were made on top of that initial proposal. However, when a specific context of application is chosen then the task model can be refined to address specific needs, which was our case when working on the corporate environment.

What changes we made and why are subjects for another post. Follow our updates and join the discussion.
